DIY:The best homemade playdough

As most of you beside being a mother to four and a part time blogger I am also an early child care provider.

With 4 children in my care under the ages of 4 one of our staple activities is the play-dough centre.

It won’t come as a big surprise when I share that we go thru a lot of it.

I have tried dozens of home made playdough recipes and this by far is my favourite.

It’s super fast to make.
Easy on the budget and clean up is quick and easy.

This recipe produces super soft dough!

Play Dough Recipe:

1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
food coloring

Mix first 4 ingredients in a pan. Add food coloring to the water then add to the remaining ingredients and mix well.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 – 5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump”.  Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes. Play dough will keep for a long time stored in a covered plastic container or plastic sandwich bag.

This amount of play dough this recipe produced was perfect.  Each of my 4 kids received a huge clump of play dough, so there was lots to share

What’s your favourite playdough recipe?

    • Oh no!! What happened? I make this in two steps. Mix all the dry together and all the wet together. Stir the entire time with a wooden spoon makes it easier as well.

  1. My 7 year old is going to LOVE this! She enjoys playing with playdough and we too go through a lot of it so I am going to try this recipe with her this weekend! We’re going to have to make a gorgeous pink like the one in your photo.. love it!

    • We have! I’ve made a peanut butter one before but truth be told it grossed me out. Plus with toddlers it’s confusing because we don’t want them to play with their food but they can eat this.

    • We have always been pleased with this recipe. Even the older ones enjoy using it. When it’s getting close to its “prime” we let the kids build sculptures and they get a chance to take them home.

    • I’ve tried a few over the years and this is by far the quickest and easiest to make. My three year old helped me make this batch. Plus it’s the softest and pliable. Some of those recipes were awful!
