From caterpillar to butterfly

Painted Lady Butterflies

One of my favourite springtime activities to do with my children is to bring in the painted monarch butterflies. We are given the unique opportunity to watch them as they transform from tiny larvae to chrysalis to beautiful painted monarch butterflies.

It’s a chance to get up close and personal with some of our favourite bugs in a safe way.

We will be busy observing them and once the butterflies are ready to journey into the “wild unknown” we will have a picnic to celebrate their release.

How to make Moon Sand

Have you ever played with Moon Sand?

Giggles got a package of the expensive store bought stuff as a treat from her grandmother and was a little taken a back when her little sister wanted to squish her fingers in it too so, I went hunting and found this  (super duper ridiculously easy) homemade kind!
It really is easy (and cheap!) All you need is 4 cups of flour and 1/2 C of baby oil.

Mix together with your hands.
It’s powdery soft to the touch and blends really well.

My kids love play dough, but Moon Sand is a totally different level of obsession.

Be forewarned…home made moon sand is messy and not for the faint of heart.
You will have powdery white moon sand all over the table, the floor, their clothes and yourself But what child doesn’t love messy play?

And an added bonus she happily played for over an hour allowing me some time for myself!
Have you found a homemade craft that works with your toddler?
